Train how you see and think during a chess game
WayChess is a chess training platform at https://waychess.com. It teaches players what to notice and how to think during real games.
The familiar problem is this: you often know more chess than you manage to use. You know what a fork is. You know an undefended piece can become a target. You know you should check the opponent’s threats, and check whether your move hangs something. During a game you still miss these things.
The gap is not always missing knowledge. It is noticing the right thing at the right moment, then thinking in a useful order.
How did I not see that?
After a game, the hanging piece or the fork looks obvious. Knowing a pattern and noticing it in time are different skills. WayChess is designed to help close that gap.
Why puzzles do not fully solve this
Tactical puzzles are excellent at calculation once you know a tactic exists. In a puzzle the prompt is already given: there is something here, find it. In a real game nobody tells you that. First you have to notice that something deserves attention. Only then can you calculate. After you have a candidate, you still have to check what the move changes.
WayChess does not replace puzzle training. It complements it. Puzzles train whether you can find the tactic once the alarm has gone off. WayChess trains whether you hear the alarm, and what to check next.
The WayChess thinking process
WayChess trains a repeatable order before you play:
1. Threat assessment — What does my opponent threaten? What is vulnerable in my position? 2. Find the best move — What opportunities do I have? What can I do to them? 3. Blunder check — Before playing my candidate, what changes? Does the move hang something, abandon a defender, or walk into a fork?
The same feature means different things at different stages. An undefended piece during threat assessment is one of mine. While looking for a move, it is one of theirs. In the blunder check, it is something my intended move might leave undefended.
Chess board awareness
Chess board awareness is the ability to notice relevant threats, opportunities and changes in a position before deciding what to calculate or play.
It is one major part of WayChess, not the entire product. Before calculation, you must notice what deserves calculation. During the decision, you need a process. Before committing, you check the consequences.
Habits
You cannot consciously search for every chess pattern at once. WayChess isolates specific checks and drills them across many positions, with immediate feedback, until they become quick enough to use in a game.
Learn what to notice, practise it in isolation, repeat it, integrate it into the thinking process, then apply it while actually making moves.
